Who
We Are Quality of Life Brooklyn ("QLB") is a group of people who live on State Street and Atlantic Avenue (Between 3rd and Flatbush Avenues), and on Third Avenue (between State Street and Atlantic Avenue), in Brooklyn, New York. We organized in early 2011 because we were concerned about the declining quality of life in our neighborhood -- in particular, the rising noise level from new businesses and some old businesses on Atlantic and Third Avenues. In 2010 and early 2011, some afternoons and late into the evenings, on weeknights and weekends, the sound from live music and/or voices of large groups of people was so loud that you could hear it clearly from inside your home with all the windows closed. These incidents were getting more and more frequent. So we organized. By working together, we have been very successful! A Template for Community Success - We Have Three Major Victories Behind Us! QLB has had three major successes! First, a local tavern. With the gracious help of Community Board Two in Brooklyn, and a tremendous outpouring of support from our members which included a letter writing campaign, we were able to come together with the proprietor of the tavern and reach an agreement regarding the use of outdoor areas acceptable to all parties. The proprietor of the tavern has, indeed, proven to be a man of his word, and the tavern is now a QLB recommended business! Truly, it is a nice place to go, and a nice neighbor to have. Second, a new French restaurant. Wisely, the proprietors of this establishment contacted us prior to their opening and sat down with us. We worked with both the restaurant's architect and their attorney to reach an arrangement that minimized disruption of the community and impact on the restaurant's business. Again, Community Board Two has been an essential partner in this process and the restaurant is another QLB recommended business! Third, a local coffee shop/performance space was chastened and quieted down, again with help of Community Board Two and the owner of the building in which the coffee shop was located. We are now tackling the problem of a restaurant fan that seems rather like jet engines. Those of you on our mailing list will receive a more detailed update. We are hopeful that the situation can be dealt with to everyone's satisfaction. State Street Entering BBG's 2012 Greenest Block in Brooklyn Contest! Those of us who live on State Street between 3rd Avenue and Flatbush Avenue are seriously considering entering the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens Greenest Block in Brooklyn Contest! Our first organizational meeting will be on an upcoming Thursday evening. Email us if you would like to be notified about the date and time. Look back here on the website for more information in the last weeks in April 2012. The following is reprinted from the BBG Greenest Block Contest site: The purpose of the Greenest Block in Brooklyn Contest is to promote streetscape gardening, tree stewardship, and community development in the borough of Brooklyn through block and merchant associations and other community groups. The contest is free to enter. Winners will receive cash prizes or gardening tools, and all participants will be awarded a recognition certificate. Join UsQLB has no sign in sheet, no membership dues. If you want to be involved, all you need to do is contact us and we will let you know when our next meeting is. You can give as little or as much time as you want. Just knowing that you are out there and that you believe in what we are doing is valuable to us. For Those in Other Neighborhoods Who Have Similar ProblemsSince this website was launched in early 2011, we have been contacted many times by people outside of Boerum Hill with similar issues. Feel free to email us. We have put together a document that contains suggestions for success in these matters. If you take only one thing from this website - we hope that it is this: if you are bothered by any of the issues that you have read about here - you are not alone, and you are not powerless. Quality of Life Brooklyn - changing our community for the better, one step at a time. |
